What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to URLs to track the source of website traffic in analytics tools. The five parameters: utm_source (where traffic comes from, e.g. 'newsletter'), utm_medium (the channel, e.g. 'email'), utm_campaign (campaign name), utm_term (paid keyword), utm_content (ad variant).
Which UTM parameters are required?
Source and medium are the minimum. Campaign is strongly recommended. Term is used for paid search to identify keywords. Content is used for A/B testing different ad creatives or links. Without source and medium, GA4 can't properly attribute traffic.
How should I name UTM parameters?
Use consistent lowercase naming conventions across your entire team. Decide on a taxonomy (e.g. medium is always 'email', 'paid-social', 'cpc', 'organic-social') and document it. Inconsistent naming creates fragmented data in GA4 that's difficult to analyse.
